My Aged Care: Providing Elderly Care Throughout Australia
The total population of elderly people in Australia is increasing every year. The senior population will inevitably need proper care services in order to live independent and confident in their own homes. Surveys suggest that most Australian elderlies prefer to stay in their homes as they age. To have this option of staying at home, some may require assistance with their daily tasks. The good news is that this can be made available via the access to several services provided by the government that will help to live independently.
My Aged Care is a funding package provided by the Australian government. Help at home or Home Care Packages are available to help keep the elderly in their homes providing flexible choices with optimal care and services.
What are the different types of home care packages available?
There are four levels and they are characterized as follows:
- Level 1 (HCP Level 1) - basic care needs are provided such as personal care, domestic assistance, meal preparation and diet, medication, shopping, transportation, and social support.
- Level 2 (HCP Level 2 or HCP2) - elderly with low-level care needs are supported. You or your loved ones can receive assistance with personal care, domestic assistance, meal preparation and diet, medication, shopping, transportation, and social support, home and garden maintenance, home modifications, goods, equipment and assistive technology.
- Level 3 (HCP Level 3 or HCP3) - elderly with intermediate care needs are supported. If you or a loved one needs an intermediate level of care, you can have assistance with personal care, domestic assistance, meal preparation and diet, medication, shopping, transportation, social support and support with changes to memory and/or behavior.
- Level 4 - elderly with high-level care needs are supported. This may include assistance with domestic and medical or complex nursing support from showering to dressing.
As the level increases, so does the number of hours of care provided. Once you have been assessed and are eligible for a Home Care Package, you may have to wait for the approval and the waiting time varies on your designated level. Those with more urgent needs are prioritized accordingly.
The services provided by the government may also be financial support, pensions, and benefits that are designed for elderly care. Care is provided in various forms making sure love, comfort, and respect for the elderly are sustained.
